Next meetings: will post when scheduled (note, April 26, 2007). We will be discussing in more detail our legislative lobbying plans (eliminating a primary election in favor of Instant Runoff voting in general election and apportioning electoral college votes on the basis of the state's popular vote). We will also be discussing potential plans for a statewide initiative and learning more about alternative election methods to the Instant Runoff.

Choice Voting

Choice Voting What it would do in Seattle
How it would work in Seattle

One of our current projects is to complete a petition drive which would change Seattle's method of electing its mayor, city attorney, and city council using "Choice Voting." "Choice Voting" will produce "Proportional Representation" of all Seattle voters on the city council and will select the mayor and city attorney using "Instant Runoff Voting" which will produce majority rather than plurality winners. We currently have about 18,000 signatures and we need 30,000 validated signatures to get the measure on the ballot.

Electoral College

We believe our State's 11 Electoral College Votes should reflect our State's popular vote for President. We are working for passage of a bill which would accomplish this.

Changes in the Blanket Primary

The principal purpose of a Primary Election is for the State's Major political parties to select their nominees. We believe that the State's Major parties should select their nominees in their own time at their own expense, just as Minor parties are required to do now. This would eliminate the need to conduct a primary election thus shortening the campaign season and reducing election costs to the candidates as well as the taxpayers.

Modernizing Election Equipment

Improved voting systems operate most efficiently with modern voting equipment. All but 16 of Washington's 39 Counties have such equipment. We encourage continuous research and improvement of efficient voting equipment.

Speakers Bureau

We are eager to introduce schools and organizations to the concept of Proportional Representation. We can demonstrate how it works using mock elections and compare the results with our current Single Member voting system.
